Goal Setting – Live your best life in 2023

"a goal without a plan is just a wish"

As we enter a new year, it’s time to focus on the goals we would like to achieve in 2023. Setting goals with an action plan are preferable to just making new year’s resolutions. When we make new years resolutions with no real action plan, we are just setting ourselves up for early burnout which usually occurs by the end of January. Whether it’s being more active, writing a book, getting a promotion, setting up a new business, running a marathon, establishing a meditation practice etc, setting goals is a key part of achieving success.

Setting goals for ourselves will provide us with a vested reason for waking up in the mornings with enthusiasm. This is fundamental to both our mental and physical well being.

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible”  – tony robbins

Benefits of Goal Setting

  • Gives you a sense of  purpose and direction – Goals motivate you to take action and provide a clear path to follow.
  • Provides greater focus – Goal setting helps to set out your intentions and gives you a clear daily focus which will motivate you to take action on a daily basis until you reach your target.
  • Increased productivity – Setting goals has been shown in studies  to increase productivity by between 10 – 25%.
  • Higher levels of  motivation- Goals will improve motivation by giving you a tangible result for your efforts. Each time you meet a target, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment which will encourage you to keep going.
  • Provides accountability – When you hold yourself accountable to your goals, you are communicating to yourself, others and the universe that the goal is a priority. Holding yourself accountable means engaging in self discipline to achieve your desired results.
  • Gives you control over your future – Without goals, you lack direction and give power to others to direct the course of your life.
  • Trigger better behavior – Having a clear and compelling goal will act as a trigger for mobilizing your focus towards new and better behaviors designed to help you achieve your desired result.
  • Promote self mastery – Self mastery is the ability to take control of your life. It allows you to recognise and understand your thought processes, habits and behaviors.
  • Propels you to live your best life – Going with the flow can be fine for a while but its living with real intention and purpose that gives you a proper sense of achievement and sees you thriving.
  • Make you feel good – Having clearly defined goals and targets that you stick to will help you feel good about yourself and your life.

“if you have a goal in life that takes a lot of work, that incurs a great deal of interest and that is a challenge to you, you will always look forward to waking up to see what the new day brings” – susan polis schultz

The Best Way To Set Goals For 2023

  •  Begin with the end in mind – This is the second of the seven habits that Dr Stephen Covey defines in his best selling book “The 7 habits of highly effective people”.  Beginning with the end in mind is based on the premise that all things are created twice: Once in the mind and then subsequently in the physical world. By beginning with the end in mind, you can train yourself to create a clear vision for yourself and become goal focused.
  •  Write them down  – It is difficult to stay motivated without realistic goals. Research shows we are more likely to achieve our goals if we write them down. Writing down your goals helps cement the goals and gives you an opportunity to fine tune them.
  • Have SMART goals –   Have goals that are Specific – Measurable -Achievable – Relevant– Timely. Specific requires that you state exactly what you want to accomplish. Measurable means that you use smaller mini goals to measure progress. Achievable means that your goals are reasonable. Realistic is about setting goals that are relevant to your life. Timely means giving yourself time but setting deadlines.
  • Make your goals visible – “Keep your eyes on the prize” by putting your written goals somewhere you’ll see them frequently so as to remind yourself of what you are aiming for. A good place to put them might be on your bedside table, your desk or your bathroom mirror or fridge etc.  Where your focus goes your energy flows, so when you do this on a daily basis and imagine also already having achieved your goals you align your purpose with your actions.
  • Break them down with an action plan – Breaking down goals into smaller steps reduces the tendency to procrastinate and helps to build momentum. Taking smaller steps towards your overall goal will also improve time management, organisation and productivity. Taking things one step at a time also reduces the  stress and anxiety involved in pursuing a major goal and enables you to properly think through the details.
  • Keep yourself accountable – Sharing your goals with friends, family members or a life coach will make you more accountable and give you a trusted partner who will help you to stay on track.
  • Celebrate your wins – It is important to acknowledge small wins and reaching smaller milestones in order to keep motivation levels up. Motivation is the fuel that keeps us on the right path and gives us the inspiration, strength  and enthusiasm to continue on with our journey. Acknowledging and celebrating small wins releases chemicals in our brains that give us a feeling of happiness and pride and keen to continue further.

“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes” – andrew carnegie

In summary

  • Clear goals will create a stable pathway which will enable you to fulfill your full potential
  • Setting goals require time, effort and evaluation.
  • Write down your goals in detail and read your list of goals everyday.
  • Work on your goals everyday
  • Foster an intense desire to succeed
  • Stay focused and work hard towards your goal.

“Every successful person begins with two beliefs: the future can be better than the present, and I have the power to make it so”

Setting goals “now” is the key to having a brighter and better future.  Goals provide a long term vision to work towards and short term goals to focus on. The only way to succeed at achieving your goals is to put some effort into planning them. Once you have a clear road map it is the vital on a daily basis to monitor your progress and hold yourself accountable. If you remain committed to your goals and foster a strong determination to succeed then you’ll be able to overcome all obstacles and  begin living your best life ever.

Wishing you a very happy, fulfilling and outstanding new year!
